India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) conduct the maiden flight trial of “TARA” (Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation) glide weapon kit off the coast of Odisha, the Defence Ministry says. The trial is described as the first successful test of India’s first indigenous glide weapon system designed to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons. TARA is presented as a modular range-extension solution intended to improve lethality and accuracy while enabling a low-cost approach to strike capabilities.

The Ministry of Defence statement says the system is designed and developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, with support from other DRDO laboratories. It also notes development and production involvement from “Development cum Production Partners” and other Indian industries, with production activity reportedly underway.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulates DRDO, the IAF, the development cum production partners, and industry stakeholders. The sources do not provide additional trial outcomes or performance metrics beyond the successful maiden trial.
