The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declares Wogu Olaka Johnson (also reported as Olaka Nwogu) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the Rivers South-East senatorial by-election held on Saturday. INEC’s returning officer, Professor Rosemary Ogu, announces the result at the INEC collation centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area.
All reports state that the PDP candidate wins the contest, defeating candidates from other parties. Premium Times and other outlets report that he records the highest vote total, while the nearest challengers from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other cleared parties receive substantially lower figures. Nigerian Eye also provides breakdowns for APC and additional parties.
The by-election takes place across seven local government areas: Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Andoni, Oyigbo and Opobo, organised to fill a vacancy created by the death of former Senator Barry Mpigi in February 2026. Nigerian Eye adds that INEC notes technical glitches involving BVAS during the election, but says backup devices are deployed and voting continues.
The winner is set to represent the Rivers South-East senatorial district in the National Assembly.
