Newly recruited civil servants in Oyo State petition Governor Seyi Makinde rejecting the state’s reintroduced contributory pension scheme. The workers, who were employed in January 2025, describe the scheme as an additional burden that would increase hardships for employees. They ask to be exempted from the new arrangement and to remain under the previous pension system used before the contributory pension scheme was re-commenced.

The employees present their case in a “Save Our Souls” petition made available in Ibadan. They say they accepted their appointments with the expectation that their pension benefits would match those of colleagues already serving under the earlier pension arrangement. They argue that applying the contributory pension scheme retroactively to their employment terms is unfair and demoralizing, and they contend it would affect trust in government policies.

The Oyo State government announced the re-commencement of the contributory pension scheme recently, saying it is aimed at ensuring sustainability and delivering long-term benefits. The petitioners dispute the fairness of the timing and insist their recruitment circumstances should be considered.
