Former Kaduna State Governor Ahmed Makarfi calls on President Bola Tinubu to declare a national emergency to address Nigeria’s escalating insecurity. Speaking to journalists at his residence in Kaduna, Makarfi says worsening security challenges increasingly affect governance, economic activity and social stability. He argues that security should be a top priority because it directly shapes national development and can reduce hardship if meaningful progress is made. He cautions against treating the issue primarily as a matter for criticism, instead urging practical, coordinated steps that involve the federal government and state governments, and extending to local levels. Makarfi warns that the current security situation is nearing a “state of war,” and says government resources and attention should be redirected toward security measures such as manpower, training, equipment and logistics, even if it means deprioritising other routine projects. He also says insecurity should not be politicised. In the same remarks, Makarfi discusses broader political issues, including preparations for the 2027 elections and the ongoing reconciliation efforts within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), saying political engagement should not come at the expense of governance.

21 hours agoFormer Kaduna State Governor, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a national emergency on insecurity, stressing that Nigeria’s escalating security challenges demand urgent, extraordinary measures and a coordinated national response. Makarfi made the call while speaking with journalists at his residence in Kaduna on Sunday. He also addressed issues ranging from the 2027 general elections to the ongoing crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The former governor, who also served as PDP national chairman, acknowledged that uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999 is a notable achievement. However, he expressed concern that the country’s failure to effectively tackle insecurity is undermining governance, economic growth, and social stability. “Security should be the number one priority because of its direct impact on economic activities and national development,” he said, adding that significant progress on security would automatically ease hardship and boost the economy. Makarfi advised against mere criticism of the Tinubu administration’s security efforts, instead calling for practical solutions. He proposed that the President, in collaboration with state governments, declare a national emergency on security and reorder governance priorities accordingly. “The reality is that on the ground, the security challenges are becoming wider. So, for me, rather than criticising, it is better to advise,” he stated. He described the current situation as approaching a state of war, arguing that routine governance activities like rural electrification should take a backseat while resources are heavily directed toward security enhancement, including manpower, training, equipment, and logistics. Makarfi emphasised the need for a joint effort involving federal, state, and local governments, and warned against politicising the insecurity crisis. “We have a big problem, and we have to do something about it,” he added. On preparations for the 2027 elections, he described political consultations and realignments as normal in a democracy but cautioned that governance must not be neglected. He opposed any move to deregister political parties that have complied with INEC guidelines, saying it would be viewed as politically motivated if done at this stage. Regarding the PDP crisis, Makarfi called for reconciliation among members and expressed confidence in the party’s future, describing it as deep-rooted and not built around any individual. He ruled out personal ambitions for elective office, preferring to support younger leaders.
