Multiple outlets report that Santa Monica Studio has been developing God of War Laufey for nearly a decade, with actress Deborah Ann Woll—who provides motion capture and voice work for the protagonist Faye—saying she first learned about the project around 2018. Woll describes that God of War 2018 director Cory Barlog brought her into the studio and pitched the idea at that time, during discussions related to God of War Ragnarok. According to Woll, Barlog also showed her the 2018 PS4 game and had early materials for the Laufey concept, including a poster featuring Woll as Faye and a cube character. Sources also say this cube later corresponds to Phranque, a talking cube associated with the game’s lore. GameSpot adds that Phranque is voiced and motion-captured by Jack Quaid, who wore a cube-shaped harness. The coverage agrees that previous entries in the franchise had been building toward this next chapter, and that Woll had to keep her involvement and knowledge private for years. All sources note the game’s development timeline but do not provide a release date.
