The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) plans to build a mini pumping station at the Maharashtra Nagar subway in Mankhurd to address recurring monsoon flooding. The move comes after the BMC implemented solutions at other waterlogging locations, including Hindmata in Parel and the Milan Subway in Santacruz. Maharashtra Nagar is described as a chronic waterlogging spot because the area slopes toward Thane Creek, leaving the subway as one of the lowest points in its drainage catchment; even light rainfall can cause water accumulation and disrupt traffic.

Under the proposal, the BMC will construct an underground storage/collection arrangement and a sump pit with high-capacity pumping. Collected rainwater will be routed through a 1,200-mm-diameter pipeline to discharge into Thane Creek. The pipeline is described as extending roughly 430 metres, linking the collection pit to the creek.

The BMC currently relies on temporary pumping during each monsoon season, with multiple pumps of varying capacities, but officials say it has not been sufficient. The project is estimated at about ₹14 crore, and BMC documents indicate contracting and approval processes are underway, with pumping units planned for monsoon operations for several years.
