The PGA Tour approves a new two-tier competition model beginning in 2028, creating an “elite” tier with a larger player field and a separate “secondary” tier. Under the plan approved by the PGA Tour’s board, the number of players and the distribution of prize money change between tiers, with prize money for the secondary group reported to be cut roughly in half compared with the elite tier.

Several elements are still being finalized, including which tournaments will count toward the elite “Championship Series” and which events will feed the lesser “Challenger Series.” Sources say there are about 15 tournaments potentially involved in the Championship Series, and around 20 events that may want to join the Challenger Series, but the final selection is not yet confirmed.

The decision follows recommendations from the Future Competition Committee, which has been working on the proposal since it was formed last August. The change is presented as a major restructuring of PGA Tour competition and economics, with implementation details expected to be clarified closer to the 2028 start date.
