Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi condemns the remand of activist and publisher Omoyele Sowore to Kuje Correctional Centre, describing it as a “dangerous regression for democracy.” Obi’s reaction follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that orders Sowore’s remand pending the hearing of his application for a stay of execution of an earlier order that revoked his bail. The court also dismisses Sowore’s request for the judge to recuse himself over alleged bias.
Obi argues that while the judiciary remains responsible for justice, there should be safeguards against any trend that gives the appearance of state institutions being used to suppress dissent, limit press freedom, or reduce civic space. He links the concern to the need to protect fundamental rights, including freedom of expression and peaceful assembly, and warns that perceived misuse of institutions can erode public trust.
The remand also draws broader criticism from civil society, including SERAP, which says the detention targets the peaceful exercise of rights. The case continues to fuel debate over judicial independence and the space for activism and civic participation in Nigeria.
