Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta says the Delhi government will soon introduce a regulatory law to oversee coaching centres and enforce safety standards. In a video message, Gupta warns that coaching centres that do not comply with mandatory safety norms will not be allowed to continue operating in Delhi. She gives centres a one-month deadline to ensure compliance, emphasizing that the number of coaching institutes is less important than the safety of children studying in them. Gupta also asks students to report negligence or inadequate safety measures through email, phone, or messages.
The announcement follows recurring fire incidents involving coaching facilities. The chief minister points to the recent coaching centre fire in Lucknow that resulted in 15 deaths, and says the Delhi government is acting to improve oversight, accountability, and student safety. Earlier in the week, Delhi’s education minister Ashish Sood directed safety measures across the city, further indicating a crackdown on compliance ahead of the planned law.
