Pakistan says its security forces carry out a border operation against militants in Afghanistan, reporting at least 29 militants killed in ground and air actions. Pakistan describes the operation as targeting militant positions along the Afghanistan border and says the aerial component is the second such strike it has conducted on targets it links to militants inside Afghanistan. Afghan officials say the strikes also cause major civilian harm. Kabul, according to the reports, says dozens of civilians die, and that many casualties result from Pakistani jets bombing a home in Paktia province. One source specifies that the bombing kills 28 people in the home and injures 158. Separately, the Taliban says at least 38 civilians are killed in the airstrikes. The accounts therefore converge on the scale of militant casualties claimed by Pakistan and the fact that Afghan civilian casualties are reported by Afghan authorities and the Taliban, but differ in the exact figures cited for civilian deaths.
