The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) says the board term of Nika Soon-Shiong ended in June 2026, after she disclosed that she was no longer on CPJ’s board. Soon-Shiong, publisher of Drop Site News, posted on X that she had been removed, and she released an email she sent to board members raising concerns about CPJ’s review of its database of journalists killed during the Israel–Gaza war.

CPJ announced the review after Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad published obituaries identifying as combatants individuals CPJ previously listed as journalists. CPJ later said that 20 Palestinian journalists were removed from its death toll, which stands at 209 dead, and that the full review will be completed next month. Soon-Shiong questioned the review’s scope and methodology, including why only Hamas and Islamic Jihad were cited.

A CPJ response to questions from Middle East Eye says it has not changed its “longstanding methodology” and continues to classify journalists based on whether individuals are engaging in combat or inciting imminent violence, regardless of outlet affiliation. Soon-Shiong also criticized what she said was an unclear approach to excluding some Palestinian and Lebanese journalists working for state-backed media.
