Proton today introduces Lumo 2.0, describing it as the largest upgrade to its privacy-first AI assistant since its initial launch. Proton says Lumo 2.0 is rebuilt on a new architecture and adds two response modes: “Fast,” aimed at speed, and “Thinking,” optimized for more complex multi-step reasoning. The company also says Lumo 2.0 can answer everyday queries up to 76% faster than Lumo 1.4.

The update adds multimodal features including image generation, image recognition, and image editing within the same conversation. Users can upload images for analysis, create visuals from text prompts or rough sketches, and modify existing images. Proton also upgrades web search capabilities compared with Lumo 1.4, and introduces a “Memory” feature intended to learn user preferences, work style, and ongoing context. Proton says the context window for Memory is twice as large.

Additional additions include “Custom Lumos,” which Proton describes as assistants tailored to specific tasks. Lumo is available for free at Lumo.proton.me without requiring a Proton account, and Proton account users can save chat history using what it calls zero-access encryption. The service offers iOS and Android apps, with paid “Lumo Plus” and team-focused “Lumo Professional” plans.
