NASA awards contracts to Astrobotic, Firefly, and Intuitive Machines to build lunar landers as part of a future programme to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon. Across the three companies, NASA allocates a total of about US$600 million to carry out four lunar landings. The landings are intended to support development and readiness for a planned crewed outpost on the Moon’s surface by demonstrating mission capabilities and enabling surface operations.

The contracts focus on developing and delivering lunar lander systems that can transport payloads to the Moon. By selecting multiple providers, NASA aims to broaden technical approaches and increase the pace of landing demonstrations tied to the broader “Moon base” concept. The specific arrangement includes multiple missions rather than a single deployment, reflecting an incremental approach to building experience in landing, operations, and integration of mission components for future crewed activities.

The announcements describe the awards as steps toward the groundwork for a future lunar base, with the landings serving as milestones in the development timeline.
