Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar warns President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian government to ensure that nothing happens to Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The warning comes in a statement by Atiku’s spokesperson, Phrank Shaibu, and is framed as a precaution regarding Obi’s safety.

Separately, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Yusuf Gagdi, argues that Atiku and Obi are not strategically positioned to defeat Tinubu in 2027. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Gagdi says he has not seen sufficient political efforts by Atiku or Obi to unseat the president, and that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is more advanced in national mobilisation and political activities than opposition parties. He also dismisses claims that opposition figures are not strategising, adding that some opposition actors exploit security challenges for political purposes rather than offering solutions.

One report also states that the Independent National Electoral Commission has confirmed that Atiku and Obi’s credentials have been uploaded to its portal, setting up a reported three-way contest among Tinubu, Atiku and Obi, alongside other candidates. Other commentators and political figures offer varying predictions for the likely winner.
