A young couple in Indonesia’s Aceh province is publicly caned after a sharia court convicts them of violating Islamic law for kissing during a TikTok livestream. Multiple outlets report that Aceh’s provincial version of Islamic law treats the act as a “morality” offense when the man and woman are not married. The court sentences the man and woman to receive 21 lashes each using a rattan cane. Coverage says the punishment takes place in a public park in Banda Aceh and is witnessed by at least 100 people. Several reports describe the caning being carried out on a stage by a group of men wearing robes and hoods. ABC News, The Guardian, and other outlets identify the accused as a 22-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, while at least one report says the couple’s ages are not disclosed. The incident is widely linked to the couple’s livestreamed video on TikTok and reflects Aceh’s conservative application of sharia rules in public life.
