India sends a delegation to represent the country at the state funeral of Iran’s former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Indian officials say Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita will travel to Iran on 3 July to attend the ceremonies. Reports also note that other Indian political figures, including Mehbooba Mufti and Salman Khurshid, are already in Iran to pay respects ahead of the formal state funeral. According to the Indian foreign ministry statements cited by multiple outlets, the delegation reflects the emphasis India places on longstanding “civilisational ties” and people-to-people connections between the two countries.

The funeral process is scheduled to begin in Tehran on 4 July. Accounts also describe a broader multi-day programme, with public ceremonies and processions and the final burial in Mashhad, where Khamenei was born. One report adds that Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei does not attend the ceremonies, citing security concerns. Khamenei was reportedly killed on 28 February, with the funeral delayed amid ongoing conflict.
