A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin fixes July 22, 2026, for the arraignment of former Senate President Bukola Saraki in a criminal defamation case brought by the state government. The case follows allegations that Saraki made defamatory statements against Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq through a social media post on April 17. The prosecution’s one-count charge alleges the publication was false, insulting, and capable of causing a breach of the public peace, contrary to section 399 of the Kwara State Penal Code.

At a ruling delivered on Friday, the presiding judge, M.O. Folorunso (also referenced as Folorunsho), dismisses Saraki’s preliminary objections, including a challenge to the court’s jurisdiction. The judge also declines the prosecution’s request for a bench warrant tied to Saraki’s earlier absence from court. The defence had raised multiple objections, including issues relating to the competence of the charge and service of court processes. Saraki’s media office states that his lead counsel was indisposed on the day of proceedings and says Saraki has instructed his lawyers to appeal the jurisdiction ruling before the case proceeds to the substantive matter.
