The Federal Government calls on journalists and social media influencers to avoid providing bandits and terrorists with the publicity they seek. Speaking at the maiden edition of the Arewa Media Summit in Kano, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris says the media has a role in denying violent extremists visibility while promoting national unity, resilience, and hope. He adds that media coverage can help prevent violent groups from using attention to spread fear.
Idris also highlights the need for professionalism, fairness, and integrity in journalism, saying democracy depends on transparent governance, responsible citizen participation, and the media carrying out its constitutional duties. He warns that the spread of smartphones and social media accelerates fake news and disinformation, which can weaken national unity and public trust.
The summit organiser, Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, says the event is meant to strengthen dialogue among government, citizens, and the media through accountability and ethical communication. He urges influencers to verify information before posting and to avoid content that could drive division, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
