Maestral, a free and lightweight open-source Dropbox client for macOS, is no longer actively maintained, according to its developer Sam Schott. Schott says that as of 2026-07-28 the project is archived, meaning it will not receive further updates and is not under active development. The current version is expected to keep working for a “medium term,” primarily until its security certificates expire. After that point, it will eventually stop working unless the project is updated or continued by someone else.

Multiple sources describe Maestral’s role over about seven years, noting that it has helped users sync Dropbox folders on setups where Dropbox’s official client support is limited or has changed. Maestral operates in the background and syncs a local folder to Dropbox using Dropbox’s APIs, while supporting features such as selective sync and managing multiple Dropbox accounts.

The developer indicates he has stepped away from Dropbox and has moved on from maintaining the project due to limited time. While the code is open source and could be forked, the project’s future maintenance depends on whether another contributor takes it over.
