Martinique, a French overseas department, officially takes its seat in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) for the first time during the opening ceremony of the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government in St Lucia. The participation follows Martinique’s formal accession as an associate member, which enters into force on June 16, 2026, after the accession agreement was signed in Barbados last year. The process also includes ratification of the CARICOM agreement on privileges and immunities.

CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett welcomes Martinique as the community’s seventh associate member at the ceremony. Martinique’s representatives describe the move as the start of a longer process of translating associate status into practical engagement with neighbours, including business, financing, and investment.

CARICOM’s outgoing chairman, Prime Minister Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis, frames Martinique’s arrival as aligned with CARICOM’s purpose of bringing Caribbean countries and territories together around integration initiatives that benefit member states. Martinique’s leadership says it plans to use the dual positioning for economic exchanges, cooperation, mobility, and investment, positioning Martinique as a connection point among the Caribbean, the Americas, Europe, and Africa.
