Prabhas Mondal, described by multiple outlets as a prime accused in the rape and murder of an 11-/12-year-old girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, is killed in a police encounter. Police say officers take Mondal to Suryapur early on July 8 to reconstruct the sequence of events. During the reconstruction, he allegedly tries to snatch a service revolver from an officer and attempts to flee. Police state that Mondal then fires at the police team, prompting retaliation. Mondal is injured and is taken to a hospital, where doctors declare him dead.
NDTV and other reports also describe Mondal as among the early suspects arrested after the girl’s body is found stuffed inside a sack in a pond in Baruipur. Mint and The Hindu frame the death as occurring during the reconstruction process. Mint reports that Mondal’s mother does not claim the body, saying he deserves punishment.
Some reports also note political reactions to the encounter, while police maintain the action was in response to attempted escape and firing during the reconstruction.
