Several local government units (LGUs) in Cebu suspend classes and, in some areas, government work after volcanic ash from Mt. Kanlaon’s eruption reaches parts of the province. Phivolcs reports that Kanlaon erupts at about 5:51 a.m. on July 9 and the eruption ends around 7:36 a.m., producing an ash plume that prevailing winds carry toward western and central Cebu. Ashfall is reported in areas including Toledo City, Pinamungajan, and Aloguinsan, and residents also see ash in other parts such as Balamban, Minglanilla, and Cebu City. In response, several LGUs order suspension of classes at all levels in both public and private schools. Reported suspensions include Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, and the municipalities of Minglanilla, Pinamungajan, Aloguinsan, Asturias, Consolacion, Cordova, as well as Toledo City, where the mayor also suspends work in local government offices. On July 10, further advisories list additional LGU class suspension orders as authorities continue monitoring ash effects. Authorities also issue reminders for residents to take precautions during ashfall.
