Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler, best known for hits including “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero,” dies at the age of 75. Her family and team confirm in a statement that she died unexpectedly on Wednesday night in hospital in Portugal, where she was receiving treatment for an illness. Tyler had been living in Faro, Portugal, and had been admitted there after feeling unwell around a month earlier. Reports say she underwent emergency intestinal surgery, following severe abdominal pain and a burst appendix, after she was transferred from a private hospital to the Faro hospital.

Following the surgery, she suffered a cardiac arrest and required resuscitation, and she was later described as being in an induced coma. Her death ends a long career that began in the 1970s under the name Bonnie Tyler, after she was born Gaynor Hopkins. Throughout her career she released numerous albums and remained active in later years, with her final album “The Best Is Yet to Come” released in 2021. She represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013 and received an MBE in 2022 for services to music.
