Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken recounts a serious heart incident from his playing days that he says left him clinically dead for seven minutes before being revived. The story dates to March 13, 2001, when Solbakken was 33 and about six months into his stint with Danish club Copenhagen. During a training session, he suffered a heart attack; club doctor Frank Odgaard administered cardiac massage while an ambulance was summoned. When medics arrived, Solbakken’s heart had stopped and he was pronounced clinically dead for seven minutes, but he was revived in the ambulance and placed on life support in hospital for 26 hours before gradually regaining consciousness. Later, doctors concluded he was born with a heart defect. Solbakken was fitted with a pacemaker, which he says he still uses. He also describes further scares: in 2009, while managing Copenhagen, his heart stopped again, but the pacemaker saved him, and he later experienced what felt like pacemaker vibration during an interview before it was traced to microphone interference. Despite these episodes, he says he manages well and continues his coaching career.
