A coalition of music industry organizations and artists’ groups has launched a new, unified labeling program to indicate whether a track uses artificial intelligence in sound recordings. According to multiple outlets, the effort brings together organizations including the RIAA and IFPI, as well as the Grammys and SAG-AFTRA. The program introduces two suggested, simple icon-based labels intended to be used by digital platforms and other industry participants.
The labels distinguish between tracks described as “AI-generated” and those described as “AI-assisted,” providing a standardized way for services, distributors, and other intermediaries to communicate how AI is used in the creation process. The guidance is designed to work across digital distribution channels, with the aim of creating consistent consumer-facing information.
Participation is voluntary, and the labels are positioned as a practical convention that can be adopted by digital music services and rights holders rather than a legally mandated requirement. The groups’ announcement focuses on transparency around AI involvement in sound recordings, using a shared set of labels that digital services can integrate into their listings.
