The Labour Party (LP) has announced Hajia Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. The announcement is made in conjunction with the party’s presidential flagbearer, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, forming an Okereke–Konto ticket. Party officials say the nomination follows consultations and aligns with the LP’s stated emphasis on competence, integrity, inclusiveness and patriotism. Multiple outlets report that Okereke explains his choice as being driven by her competence and the national interest. Konto is described as a veteran nurse, midwife and public health specialist with a Master’s degree in Public Health, along with experience in healthcare and humanitarian work, including roles with governments, civil society and international organizations. One account highlights her leadership and programme coordination in health, nutrition, sanitation and humanitarian response, including in conflict-affected areas of Northern Nigeria. Another outlet also says Konto speaks several languages, including English and Hausa, among others, and that this is viewed by the party as an asset for national unity. The LP presents the ticket as a move toward people-centred leadership and calls on Nigerians to support the candidates ahead of the election.
