The European Parliament adopts a resolution calling on the Nigerian government to take “decisive action” to address insecurity, with particular focus on the Middle Belt region. The resolution comes amid concerns about attacks on Christian communities and broader violence affecting civilians. In the vote, 501 European lawmakers support the measure, with only one lawmaker voting against and 86 abstaining. The lawmakers condemn killings in the region and urge Nigerian authorities to improve security arrangements, protect vulnerable communities, and bring perpetrators of violence to justice.
The resolution highlights Plateau State, citing repeated attacks in recent months. It specifically references a June 22 raid on Kawel village in Bokkos Local Government Area, in which more than 20 Christians, including a pastor, are reported killed by armed assailants. The European Parliament also calls for intensified action against terrorist groups operating in Nigeria, including Boko Haram and ISWAP. It requests independent investigations into violent attacks and stresses the need to end impunity. The lawmakers further demand strengthened civilian protection mechanisms, better early warning systems, and investment in conflict-prevention efforts in affected areas.
