Samsung Electronics will begin operations in 2029 at the first semiconductor fabrication plant in its Yongin chip cluster, according to industry sources cited by multiple outlets. The start date is described as one to two years earlier than Samsung’s previously planned timeline. The adjustment is linked to the South Korean government accelerating development of the Yongin National Industrial Complex, a strategic project intended to serve as a next-generation semiconductor manufacturing hub just south of Seoul.
Sources say Samsung’s plan currently targets 2029 for the first of six semiconductor plants to be built at the Yongin industrial complex. The company also connects the timing to the need to respond to rapidly growing global demand for artificial intelligence chips.
In related developments, Samsung said last month that its broader mega investment plan includes 2,030 trillion won (about $1.35 trillion) for its Pyeongtaek and Yongin semiconductor clusters, and an additional 400 trillion won to build two new chip plants in Gwangju. Other reporting also notes wider investment pledges by Samsung Group and SK Group in the southwest region under the government’s tripolar mega-project framework, with supporting measures from relevant ministries.
