Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi says that, if elected president, he would strengthen opposition parties and ensure they play an active role in governance. Obi made the remarks during an interview with media entrepreneur Chude Jideonwo, which aired on Saturday. He said he would take steps to make opposition parties “strong and participatory,” arguing that bringing different political actors together for consultation and discussion would lead to better results for citizens.

Asked about whether President Bola Tinubu believes his party is the strongest option to “rescue the country,” Obi said no single party has a monopoly on ideas that can make society work. He also discussed the need for politicians and parties to work toward aligning different ideas for the public interest.

The reports note that Obi was involved in building an opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in July 2025 and later joined it formally on December 31, 2025. In May 2026, he left the ADC for the NDC, citing internal divisions and court cases.
