A fresh public debate over E20 petrol—fuel blended with up to 20% ethanol—has intensified in India after a viral social media clip featuring YouTuber Saurav/Sourav (reported as Saurabh/Sourav in different posts) Joshi and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. In the clip, Joshi alleges a sharp drop in his vehicle’s fuel efficiency after switching to E20, saying mileage fell from around 16–17 kmpl to about 9 kmpl and later to around 5 kmpl. Another vehicle owner in the video makes a similar complaint to Kejriwal, with some posts claiming “mileage has finished.”
Kejriwal says he spoke to mechanics and vehicle owners in Delhi and that they reported issues and long queues linked to E20. The specific performance claims in the online posts have not been independently verified, and immediate responses to those allegations were not reported.
Mercedes-Benz India has issued a customer advisory stating that all its petrol BS VI models are materially compatible with E20 and have been certified by relevant authorities. The company says it prioritises customer safety, reliability and performance and is available to address technical questions.
Separately, some users claim Joshi removed or edited E20 criticism from a vlog, but he has not publicly commented on that allegation.
