Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, says Africa has the potential to feed itself and the world if it is governed by “good leaders.” In a statement posted on his verified X account on Sunday, Obi made the remarks after speaking at the African Union Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations in New York on “The Role of the Diaspora African in Sustainable Development across Africa.” He argues that Africa’s vast resources include minerals and arable land, alongside a large population, which he describes as the continent’s key asset. Obi also highlights persistent poverty across Africa. He says that of roughly 800 million people living in extreme poverty globally, nearly 60% are in Africa—about 480 million—citing Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo among countries most affected. He adds that nearly one in every three Africans lives in extreme poverty and that Africa carries the largest burden of multidimensional poverty. Drawing on these figures and land-use claims, Obi contends that better leadership and governance could turn Africa’s agricultural potential into broader food security and a major global food role.
