NTPC’s board approves a ₹20,456.7 crore investment for the Lara Super Thermal Power Project, Stage-III, in Chhattisgarh, according to an exchange filing dated 11 July 2026. The planned capacity is 1,600 MW, structured as two units of 800 MW each. The filing describes the approval as part of NTPC’s ongoing expansion to meet growing electricity demand.
In related disclosures earlier this year, NTPC had sought bids from technology solutions providers to support sub-critical thermal units operating at lower loads while improving flexibility for the power distribution network to handle a mix of thermal and renewable generation more efficiently. NTPC said the technical support would be aimed at sub-critical units in the 150 MW to 250 MW range, including enabling two-shift operation and a minimum technical load of 25%.
NTPC also characterizes sub-critical units as offering greater operational flexibility for grid balancing compared with supercritical and ultra-supercritical technologies, citing lower parameter swings and reduced fatigue, alongside the ability to efficiently adapt to frequent cycling—conditions it links to future renewable integration.
