Researchers report that mosquitoes do not respond equally to all humans, and that their attraction depends on multiple sensory cues. Reporting on recent work, scientists say the key signals include the smell and heat of the body and the carbon dioxide (CO2) people exhale. They note that mosquitoes can detect CO2 at long distances and that, as they get closer, human odour becomes more important alongside CO2. Female mosquitoes, which are the only ones that bite, use receptors to process these cues when choosing a target.

Scientists also say some widely discussed ideas lack strong evidence. Frederic Simard, a medical entomologist, says mosquito attraction is not based on blood type and that there is no scientific basis for preferences linked to skin, eye or hair colour. Instead, odour chemistry plays a role, including compounds produced or influenced by skin microbes.

One referenced study involved lab tests with Aedes aegypti mosquitoes and 42 women. The researchers identified a limited set of detectable odorous compounds and found that higher levels of a particular skin-oil breakdown product, 1-octen-3-ol, correspond with greater mosquito preference. Other studies cited link alcohol consumption and beer to increased attraction through effects on body temperature, CO2 and skin odour. Researchers say understanding these patterns is increasingly urgent as mosquito ranges expand with climate change.
