Former Kogi West Senator Smart Adeyemi has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to introduce compulsory medical checks at party gatherings following the sudden death of Hon. Oyewole Mayowa Solomon, APC Chairman in Ijumu Local Government Area.Solomon reportedly slumped and died during a reconciliation meeting in Iyara on Friday, leaving party members and his community in shock.In a statement issued in Lokoja, Adeyemi described the incident as “painful, shocking and devastating,” noting that Solomon was a young, energetic leader whose contributions to the APC in Ijumu would be difficult to replace.“Mayowa was not just an APC chairman; he was a dependable party man and, without exaggeration, the best chairman the APC has had in Ijumu Local Government Area,” Adeyemi said.The senator stressed that the tragedy highlights the need for routine health checks, particularly blood pressure screening, before major political meetings.“Political meetings can be prolonged and emotionally demanding. We cannot assume everyone is medically fit. Compulsory medical checks must be introduced to preserve lives. No meeting is more important than the life of a party member,” he added.Adeyemi recalled a similar incident in January 2024, when former Commissioner for Special Duties, Yahaya Adesayo Ismail, also slumped and died in Ijumu. He warned that lessons must be learned to prevent further losses.He extended condolences to Solomon’s family, friends, and the APC community, praying for strength to bear the loss.“His death is a painful reminder that life must always come before politics,” Adeyemi concluded.
