Wike Alleges Amaechi Shut Courts, Leading to Prison Birth in Rivers

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has accused Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate, of causing a pregnant woman to give birth in prison during his tenure as Rivers State governor.Wike made the allegation on Wednesday during his monthly media interaction with journalists. He claimed that Amaechi, who governed Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, shut down the state’s judiciary, which led to the incident.The minister levelled the accusation while criticising the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for giving Amaechi a platform to speak at its recently concluded annual conference in Port Harcourt.“Rotimi Amaechi, who wants to be vice president today, once shut down the court in Rivers State and made a pregnant woman to give birth in the prison,” Wike said.He added that if he, as FCT minister (often regarded as the territory’s de facto governor), ordered the shutdown of courts, he should not be offered a platform to justify such an action.
