Billionaire Michael Dell is selling a Boston penthouse through a sealed-bid auction, days after he briefly becomes the world’s second richest person, according to reports. The property is a 4,100-square-foot unit on the 59th floor of the Millennium Tower.

Dell bought the penthouse about a decade ago for $10.9 million and is now listing it with a significantly lower starting bid of $6.5 million. One outlet says the home is described as barely used, and that traditional efforts to sell the property did not succeed, prompting the shift to an auction. The auction is scheduled to conclude in late October.

Both reports link the timing to recent changes in Dell’s overall wealth, citing a stronger market for AI infrastructure that has supported his financial position. While the outlets frame the wealth context slightly differently, they agree the sale is driven by the decision to market the asset via auction and with a discounted valuation from the original purchase price.
