The Federal Government says deeper cooperation with China in the power sector is intended to improve access to reliable electricity and expand renewable energy in Nigeria. The statement is made by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, during an event in Abuja marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
Tegbe links the renewed focus on power to lessons from earlier Chinese-linked projects, which he says include the Lekki Deep Seaport, railway modernisation and the Zungeru Hydropower Station. He also argues future collaboration should strengthen Nigeria’s technical capacity, including training Nigerian engineers and supporting local enterprises. The Nigerian Eye also adds that cooperation should support local manufacture of power equipment. Across the two outlets, the officials describe the Nigeria–China relationship as being elevated in 2024 to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
Chinese diplomatic engagement is also mentioned, with the Chinese ambassador describing the ties as being in a “fast lane” and citing trade growth and alignment of China’s development planning with Nigeria’s priorities, including industrialisation and clean energy.
