Sony agrees to transfer hundreds of virtual reality (VR) patents to Meta, following an agreement signed in December 2025. GamesIndustry.biz reports the deal covers 419 global VR patents, including 180 patents filed in the United States. Other outlets describe the sale as involving more than 400 patents and “hundreds” of VR-related intellectual property.
Outlets differ slightly in emphasis and timing. Mashable frames the move as Sony “offloading” VR patents after its PlayStation VR 2 launch, while VGC and Pushsquare highlight that Sony appears to scale back VR ambitions. Pushsquare adds that multiple patent transfers occur between June and September of this year, and notes publication of two original PlayStation VR 2 games. Across coverage, the central point is that Meta gains broad VR patent coverage as Sony’s ownership of the technology shifts under the agreed schedule.
