Ektaa Kapoor confirms she is working on a sequel to the 2011 film “The Dirty Picture,” titled “The Dirty Picture 2.” Writing about 15 years after the original, Kapoor says she has “finally” found a story she wants to tell through the sequel, though she does not share further details.
The original film, released in December 2011, starred Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Emraan Hashmi and Tusshar Kapoor. Multiple outlets note that “The Dirty Picture” was inspired by the life of Silk Smitha, a South Indian actress who appeared in hundreds of films and died by suicide at the age of 35 in Chennai. In explaining her intent for the sequel, Kapoor says the first film’s themes—sexuality and personal choice—will remain central, and that the sequel will focus on another woman like Smitha.
Outlets differ mainly in emphasis: some focus on the confirmation and timing, while others provide background on the original film’s inspiration. Across reports, there is agreement that casting, the exact storyline, and a release date have not been announced.
