A Federal High Court in Abuja dismisses a fundamental rights lawsuit filed by businesswoman Aisha Achimugu against Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Achimugu, managing director and CEO of Felak Concept Group, challenges the EFCC’s search of her residence and the seizure of property, including cars and jewellery. She also seeks N10 billion in damages, saying the actions violate her privacy.
The court, presided over by Justice Musa Liman, holds that the EFCC has statutory power to search premises after receiving intelligence about alleged criminal activities. It rules that there is no basis to restrain the commission from carrying out its duties and dismisses Achimugu’s claim for damages.
According to the EFCC’s counsel, the decision is in the interest of justice and the lawsuit is an attempt to waste the court’s time. The outlet reports agree on the dismissal, the central allegations, the relief sought, and the court’s reasoning that the EFCC acted within its legal powers.
