Bulgaria’s prime minister, Rumen Radev, says drone strikes hit two merchant ships in the Black Sea off the Bulgarian coast on Tuesday, with one vessel sinking. Bulgarian officials report that rescuers evacuate 15 crew members from one ship, the Maltese-flagged Chelsea 3, and treat five crew members for minor injuries.

Accounts across outlets also say a total of 11 sailors are missing after the sinking of the other ship, described as cargo-related. The crew on Chelsea 3 is reported to include Ukrainian and Azerbaijani citizens, and witnesses say drones struck the ship’s deck and hull. Several reports note this is the second such deadly sinking in the area within a week.

Bulgaria summons Russia’s ambassador in response to the attacks, with Radev saying Russia likely benefited and suspecting Moscow’s involvement. Other outlets provide differing emphasis on the number of ships hit, injuries, and missing personnel, but they broadly agree on the basic sequence: drone strikes, one ship sinking, rescue and search efforts, and Bulgaria’s diplomatic protest.
