NASA reports that rotor blades for its next-generation Mars helicopters exceed the speed of sound during testing at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California. The March tests are conducted inside a specialized chamber designed to simulate environmental conditions on Mars. Engineers examine rotor performance at high speeds, with the fastest-moving parts—the blade tips—accelerating to above Mach 1. NASA says the blades do not break apart under these conditions, based on data collected during the runs. Phys.org adds that results come from 137 test runs, producing information that can guide design choices for future flight hardware.

NASA’s descriptions of the testing setup also note that different rotor configurations are evaluated in the simulator to replicate relevant aerodynamic effects. The purpose of the work is to improve understanding of how the next-gen rotors can operate safely at higher tip speeds, helping enable designs that can lift larger or heavier payloads, potentially including scientific instruments.
