France’s foreign minister says France will not approve lifting United Nations Security Council sanctions on Iran unless it is satisfied with the terms of a final agreement covering Tehran’s nuclear programme. Jean-Noël Barrot, speaking after the latest US-Iran agreement framework for renewed negotiations, says France wants to have a role in shaping the talks and in any Security Council endorsement that would be needed to end or relax the UN sanctions.

Barrot also links the question of regional stability to how the broader US-Iran engagement is handled. He says the negotiations should not be limited to nuclear issues, arguing that they must also address Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its support for proxies.

France is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and, as such, holds veto power. Sources report Barrot presenting France’s position as legally and politically tied to the Security Council resolution process, describing the lifting of UN sanctions as the return for major concessions from Iran. Separate reporting notes the US-Iran framework includes a 60-day period of talks on Iran’s nuclear programme, followed by a final deal for Security Council endorsement.
