The Green Climate Fund (GCF) has approved a US$2.1 million readiness grant to support Jamaica’s climate resilience and improve its access to international climate finance. The grant is delivered through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), acting on behalf of Jamaica. It is titled “Catalysing Climate Action by building Jamaica’s NDA Capacity & Country Investment Platform.”

The funding is intended to strengthen Jamaica’s ability to design and finance climate projects by creating a Climate Investment Platform that helps identify bankable projects and connect them with appropriate sources of funding, bringing public and private actors together. The proposal also includes strengthening institutional capacity through measures such as modernising data and knowledge-sharing systems and running a comprehensive training programme.

Jamaica will establish a Project Management Unit within the Nationally Designated Authority (NDA) office to support the work of the platform. The grant proposal was developed under the UK-funded Small Island Developing States Capacity and Resilience Programme (SIDAR) for the Caribbean.

Officials link the approval to Jamaica’s post-disaster needs, noting that recovery efforts are ongoing following Hurricane Melissa, described as a major event with substantial economic losses.
