President Bola Tinubu approves another extension for Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi, according to multiple outlets citing a statement by presidential media aide Bayo Onanuga. Adeniyi previously received a one-year tenure extension in 2025, which was set to expire on 1 August 2026. The new approval grants a further six-month extension described as final, extending his tenure to February 2027. Outlets also report that the government frames the move as a way to allow Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing reforms, including the National Single Window project, an initiative intended to link agencies involved in trade and cargo clearance to streamline processes. The extension is also said to support an orderly leadership transition within the service during the period. During the six months, Adeniyi and the NCS Board are expected to oversee promotion of eligible officers to the rank of Comptroller of Customs and ensure compulsory retirement for officers who reach age 60 or complete 35 years of service. Reports note that reactions are mixed, with some citing Adeniyi’s performance and others questioning the implications of repeated extensions for career progression within the customs service.
