Anthropic says its software development workflow has accelerated sharply after months of using Claude to generate code at high volume, making its existing Git-based infrastructure unable to keep up. In a blog post, the company reports that it merged about 2,500 code changes per day in May 2026, rising to more than 30,000 per day by September.

To address scalability and performance constraints, Anthropic built a custom centralized source-control system called Scion, along with AI-assisted tools for review and search. The company says the system is designed for AI agents by shifting more work to the server, exposing source-control queries via an API, and reducing the need for local repositories. Scion uses a “changeset” unit recorded in a write-ahead log, storing file-difference data and content-addressed references to compressed file contents in blob storage.

Outlets discussing the update characterize Scion as a modernized, centralized alternative reminiscent of earlier systems such as Subversion. Anthropic also describes extensive use of adversarial review and says the Git migration completes over about five months, after several months of preparation. The company indicates Scion is not intended as a general-purpose, open-source release.
